# Kotoba

> Kotoba (kotoba.lt) is a free two-way dictionary, Japanese–Lithuanian and Lithuanian–Japanese, that recognises inflected forms in both languages. Japanese→Lithuanian: 22,628 Japanese entries with 49,535 spellings and readings, pitch accent, Lithuanian definitions, 7,578 conjugation tables, 15,088 example sentences with Lithuanian translations and 2,521 kanji with Lithuanian meanings. Lithuanian→Japanese: 87,473 Lithuanian words, searchable by any of their 2,429,441 inflected forms, and 19,254 Lithuanian phrases with Japanese translations.

It is for Lithuanian speakers learning Japanese and Japanese speakers learning Lithuanian.

kotoba.lt has a Lithuanian interface and ja.kotoba.lt a Japanese one, with the same paths on both.

Every page listed here, and every entry, word and phrase page, has a markdown version at its URL with `.md` appended, as in https://kotoba.lt/jp/1358280/食べる.md (`index.md` for a URL ending in `/`). The page's own URL serves the same markdown to requests with `Accept: text/markdown`.

## Features

- Search: one box takes Japanese (kanji or kana), romaji or Lithuanian. Conjugated Japanese is traced back to its dictionary form: 食べさせられました (“was made to eat”) finds [食べる](https://kotoba.lt/jp/1358280/食べる?furigana=true). Any inflected Lithuanian form, with or without diacritics, finds its word: valgėme (“we ate”) finds [valgyti](https://kotoba.lt/lt/93972/valgyti?furigana=true).
- Lithuanian→Japanese index: 87,473 Lithuanian words with stress, accent class, gender, principal parts for verbs and full inflection tables; search resolves 2,429,441 inflected forms to them.
- Phrases: 19,254 Lithuanian phrases and patterns, such as “eiti kartu” and “tarp … ir”, each on its own page with its Japanese translations.
- Entries: 22,628 Japanese words with 49,535 spellings and readings, the Tokyo pitch accent of most readings, Lithuanian definitions, the kanji they are written with, and examples.
- Pitch accent: an entry's markdown gives it after the reading as the downstep in brackets, as in たべる [2]: [0] is flat (heiban), [1] falls after the first mora, [n] after the nth, and [0, 3] lists a word said both ways, the usual first.
- Form tools: type a word in any form and get every form of it. https://kotoba.lt/kaityba?z={word} for Lithuanian nouns, adjectives and verbs (cases, degrees, tenses and participles, with stress); https://kotoba.lt/formos?z={word} for Japanese verbs and adjectives, in kanji, kana or romaji.
- Reference pages: the Lithuanian alphabet, stress and inflection, and the kana and Japanese conjugation, each with its rules, example words linked to their entries and a printable A4 sheet. Japanese words on them carry their reading, in parentheses in the markdown: 書く（かく）.
- Conjugation tables: 7,578 Japanese verbs and adjectives, with polite, negative, past, te-form, potential, passive, causative and more.
- Examples: 15,088 Japanese example sentences with Lithuanian translations.
- Kanji: 2,521 kanji with Lithuanian meanings and their on and kun readings.
- Japanese interface: ja.kotoba.lt has every page in Japanese, for Japanese speakers looking up Lithuanian.

Figures as of October 2026.
